Migration of ISDN Access Lines to IP Centrex PBX Services

Challenges:

Legacy digital PBX systems do not support integration with IP infrastructure or the use of IP, SIP, and RTP technologies. As national telecom operators phase out legacy subscriber exchanges, it was necessary to ensure service continuity for users, protect existing investments, and maintain an identical user experience after migration to the telecom operator’s new platform.

Benefits:

By implementing Sangoma Vega voice gateway devices, existing equipment on the customer side was retained, including on-premises PBXs, telephone handsets, fax machines, and related devices, as well as the existing infrastructure such as cabling, outlets, and connectors, without the need for additional investment. The IP Centrex PBX service enables the integration of remote business locations into a single unified group with private numbering, without additional equipment or interconnections, while also providing services that were not available with ISDN technology.

Public Services – Civil Protection

Challenges:

The telephone system was based on an on-premises hybrid PBX with no capability for integration with the dispatch application, along with separate subsystems for call recording and playback and a standalone alerting and notification system. In addition, no redundancy was in place, meaning that in the event of a PBX outage, calls to the emergency number 123 would not be possible.

Benefits:

By implementing the communication and collaboration system, employees in the dispatch center were enabled to quickly and easily establish calls from IP desk phones or directly from the dispatch application, rapidly review recorded calls, and easily send notifications through the IP alerting and notification system across all locations where the fire and rescue brigade operates. Through the dispatch application, the IP telephony subsystem was integrated with the radio communication (LMR) system, allowing dispatch operators to manage all communication segments from a single interface. Based on the technology used, the system was designed to allow further integration of all subsystems with the Civil Protection service. The system now operates in a high-availability mode, ensuring that the failure of any single component does not compromise service continuity.

Challenges:

The company’s telephone system was based on TDM on-premises PBXs, with each field unit operating its own system, while communication with headquarters and other field units was handled through the telecom operator. One of the project objectives was to centralize the system by implementing a single communication and collaboration platform for all business units, with integration to the telecom operator’s IP Centrex PBX service limited to headquarters and larger field units. A key component of the solution is the call center, which is fully integrated into the communication and collaboration system and used to provide information to electricity consumers.

Benefits:

By implementing the latest-generation Cisco UCM and Cisco UCCX systems, the conditions were created for the shutdown and decommissioning of all legacy TDM PBXs, as well as digital and analog telephone devices. In addition to voice calls, the new system supports video calls and application-based features such as screen sharing, instant messaging, presence status, and fast document exchange. The communication and collaboration system operates in a very high-availability mode, ensuring that the failure of any single component does not compromise service continuity. The call center automatically distributes calls to agents during business hours or to on-call services outside working hours. All internal communication between headquarters and field units is handled using internal resources, without the need to involve a telecom operator.

Challenges:

The company’s telephone system was based on an on-premises TDM PBX that did not support voice message broadcasting or call queuing, which resulted in missed calls and limited the ability to communicate with every caller. An additional challenge was integrating two TDM PBXs at the Banja Luka and Bijeljina locations into a single system operated exclusively by dispatch center operators in Banja Luka.

Benefits:

By implementing the 3CX communication and collaboration system on a cloud platform, advanced functionalities were enabled, including call queuing, voice message broadcasting, and call routing to available agents in the dispatch center. Numbers assigned to the city of Bijeljina were registered on the system, allowing operators to receive and handle service-related calls from users in that city as well. Due to the specific nature of the organization’s activities, all calls are recorded to ensure an audio record of the communication. An additional benefit of deploying the system on a cloud platform is the decommissioning and removal of on-premises equipment, reduced power consumption, centralized administration, and related operational efficiencies.
